Container capacity is a geometry problem before it is a quantity promise
Two tyre orders with the same unit count can use very different container space. Diameter, section width, stiffness, nesting method, packaging, mixed sizes and handling rules all change the result. Large OTR or wide-base tyres can dominate volume, while passenger tyres may nest more efficiently.
Use indicative counts only for early budgeting. A saleable commitment should come from the final SKU list, current product dimensions, permitted loading method, container type and carrier weight limits.

The variables behind tyres per container
A 20-foot dry container, 40-foot dry container and 40-foot high-cube do not have the same internal volume. High-cube equipment adds vertical space, but the usable result still depends on door dimensions, internal fittings, cargo weight and local handling constraints. Maersk's container guidance, for example, distinguishes standard and high-cube equipment; always confirm the actual carrier specification for the booked unit.
Tyre dimensions vary by manufacturer and pattern even within the same nominal size. Nested loading can save space, but the number of tyres inserted into another tyre depends on bead and sidewall characteristics and on whether that method is acceptable for the product. Packaging, labels or separators may reduce density.
Size mix
Uniform sizes are easier to model; mixed diameters create voids but may also allow planned nesting.
Product type
PCR, TBR, agricultural and OTR products have very different volume and handling profiles.
Weight
Check cargo payload, road limits and verified gross mass—not only cubic volume.
Protection
Do not trade product condition or safe unloading for a few extra units.
How to build a reliable tyre loading plan
Start with the confirmed order lines and current technical dimensions. Group products by loading method. Estimate occupied volume conservatively, then test the arrangement against internal length, width, height, door opening and payload. Include any pallets, bands, cartons or dunnage.
For a mixed container, prioritise the commercial size mix rather than maximising total units blindly. The container should support sell-through at destination. If one slow-moving size fills a useful void but ties up cash, it may not be a genuine efficiency.
1Freeze the SKU list and substitution rules.
2Confirm dimensions, unit weight and allowed nesting for every line.
3Model the arrangement and reconcile total units and gross weight.
4Issue the final loading plan for buyer approval before loading.
What the buyer should receive after loading
Loading evidence should make reconciliation possible. Useful records include the empty container condition, container and seal numbers, product markings, loading stages, final door view and sealed container. The final packing list should match the approved order and actual loaded quantities.
Check carrier and jurisdiction rules for verified gross mass and transport documentation. When the container arrives, record the seal before opening and photograph unloading. If the count, markings or condition differ, preserve evidence before goods are dispersed.
So, how many tyres fit in a 20ft or 40ft container?
The correct answer is a range calculated for the exact product mix—not one universal number. A container of small passenger tyres, a container of 11R22.5 truck tyres and a mixed OTR/TBR load cannot share a credible capacity figure. Ask the supplier for a line-by-line loading proposal that states the container type, nesting assumptions and final count.
For background on equipment types, see Maersk's container size overview. Treat carrier specifications and booking confirmation as controlling for the actual shipment.
Frequently asked questions
Does a 40HQ always carry more tyres than a 40ft standard container?
It normally provides more internal height, but the usable gain depends on the tyre sizes, loading method, door opening, payload and handling rules.
Can truck tyres be nested?
Some tyre programmes use nesting, but suitability and the nesting ratio must be confirmed for the exact products and agreed handling method.
Should I optimise for the maximum unit count?
Optimise for the right saleable SKU mix, safe product condition, legal weight and practical unloading—not unit count alone.
