Steer, Drive and Trailer Truck Tyres

Axle position changes the forces on a tyre, the pattern priorities and the replacement stock a fleet or dealer needs.

TBR application guide

The same size can serve very different jobs

Steer, drive and trailer positions experience different combinations of steering input, torque, braking, lateral scrub and free rolling. That is why an importer should not order a truck-tyre size without also planning its application mix.

Pattern names and approved positions vary by manufacturer. Use the current technical sheet for the exact SKU; the descriptions below explain the buying logic.

What changes between steer, drive and trailer tyres

Steer axle

Steer tyres influence directional response and stability. Rib designs are common because they can support tracking, water evacuation and even wear. Shoulder durability and resistance to irregular wear matter in regional or urban service.

Drive axle

Drive tyres transmit torque. Block or lug patterns are common where traction is a priority. Tread depth, block stability and shoulder configuration should match highway, regional or mixed-surface work.

Trailer axle

Trailer tyres free-roll but face braking, lateral forces and scrub during turning. Load capacity, inflation, alignment and resistance to irregular wear are important.

All-position

An all-position product may support more than one approved use, which can simplify inventory. It should still be checked against the intended axle and service.

Axle position is only one part of application

A long-haul motorway fleet and a construction vehicle can use the same nominal size under very different conditions. Record route length, surface, speed, turning frequency, load variation, gradients, heat, rain and off-road exposure. Urban buses may experience high scrub and frequent braking; regional trucks may mix highway and local roads; construction work introduces cuts, chips and penetrations.

Select the pattern and compound from the worst recurring condition, not an exceptional photograph. A highly aggressive tread may add no value on a predominantly paved route, while a highway-oriented design may be vulnerable in severe mixed service.

Build a steer-drive-trailer stock ratio

Use historic removals and new fleet commitments to estimate replacement demand by axle. Record why each tyre left service. Premature steer removals, drive traction complaints or trailer irregular wear may indicate maintenance or application issues that more inventory alone will not solve.

For a mixed container, separate the quantity by exact pattern and axle use. Add a controlled number of all-position products only where their technical approval and commercial role are clear. The goal is service coverage and sell-through, not equal quantities.

Protect the performance you purchased

Pressure, load, alignment, wheel condition, dual matching, rotation and inspection influence tyre life. Follow vehicle, wheel and tyre-manufacturer information. Do not exceed wheel limits or treat a load index as permission to overload the vehicle.

When comparing brands or patterns, run a controlled fleet trial by position and route. Measure mileage, tread loss, removals, damage and casing outcome under comparable maintenance.

Frequently asked questions

Can drive tyres be used on the steer axle?

Use only positions approved by the tyre manufacturer and permitted by applicable fleet and regulatory requirements. Pattern appearance alone is not approval.

Why do trailer tyres wear irregularly?

Alignment, inflation, load, suspension, turning scrub, wheel condition and application can all contribute. Inspect the system, not only the tread.

Are all-position tyres best for mixed stock?

They can simplify some inventories, but approved application and performance needs still matter. Compare them with dedicated patterns for the actual fleet.
